Angular Cheilitis Treatment – There is Hope

By Katherine | Mar 20, 2009

Angular cheilitis is a chronic inflammation that occurs at the corners of the lips. The corners of the mouth are torn and inflamed. Ultimately, fungal or bacterial infection sets in. Most people who suffer from Angular cheilitis also suffer from thrush, which is a very contagious, not to say embarrassing, condition.

The bad news is that Angular cheilitis is chronic and persistent. The good news is that it can be treated, and further occurrence can easily be prevented.

The best way to treat Angular cheilitis is to find out what is causing it. In a large number of cases, the condition is a direct result of the lack of essential vitamins, like vitamin B and Riboflavin. In some cases, lack of iron in the blood can also cause the tearing of lips. If a vitamin deficiency is detected, patients are treated with essential vitamin and iron supplements. A diet rich in green leafy vegetables, lean meat, beans, rice, peanuts, fish, bananas, potatoes, cauliflower and yoghurt is recommended.

In many people, lips tear during the winter season. In that case, special care must be taken at the onset of winter to keep the skin soft and delicate. This includes the application of butter or oil, or the use of high quality lip balm. Moisturizing lipsticks and protective lip balms can greatly help the problem. Also, people who are in the habit of smacking, licking or biting their lips must desist from doing so, as this irritates the skin. The corners of the mouth should be kept constantly dry so that the lesions can heal properly.

Ill-fitting dentures may also be the culprits. These may cut deep into the skin causing inflammation and infection. To prevent bacterial and fungal deposits on the dentures, it is important to soak them in a strong protective solution.

In case there are signs of bacterial or fungal infection in the sores, a doctor will prescribe topical ointments. Sometimes, the oral intake of antibiotics is also required to bring the condition under control.

Angular cheilitis is often described as an inflammation that causes mild discomfort. But, anyone who has suffered from it will vouch for the fact that the condition can really get irksome and painful with time. Therefore, it pays to be wary of it and take preventative steps well ahead of an attack.
