Angular Stomatits or Cheilitis Treatment – What Are The Options Before You?

By Katherine | Feb 2, 2009

Angular Stomatitis (mostly known as Angular Cheilitis) is a condition in which cracks, cuts, and lesions appear at the corner of the mouth and may spread to the lips and the interior of the mouth and even become infectious. While Angular Stomatitis refers to a wide range of mouth related infections and lesions, it mostly refers to the cuts which appear at the corners of the lips.

Although there is no one treatment for Angular Cheilitis, there are some things you can and should do to improve your condition. Here are some Angular Stomatitis treatments:

Improve Vitamin Intake

Often, the outbreak of Angular Stomatitis is the result of some sort of immune system deficiency. To improve this situation, you should increase your vitamin intake, especially B12 vitamin. You should also increase your Iron intake as this may be another cause. Vitamins and Iron are present in various food sources and can also be found as nutritional Supplements.

Clean your dentures

Often, the outbreak of this is the result of ill-fitted dentures. These dentures don’t sit well within the mouth and provide a hotbed for bacteria. A good rule of thumb is to soak your dentures in water as often as possible to ensure they’re squeaky clean.

Chapped Lips

Often, Angular Cheilits accompanies chapped lips. Chapped lips actually make it harder to treat this condition as a person with chapped lips tends to lick his or her lips as often as possible. The problem is that the saliva doesn’t help to add moisture to the affected area. Angular Cheilitis and chapped lips often occur in children.

Infections

Angular Cheilitis often exhibits itself as cracks or cuts in the corners of the mouth. These often become infectious and may even develop puss. If it gotten to this point, it can take months to clear on it’s own. Some doctors prescribe certain antibiotic treatments. Others provide 1% hydro cortisone topical cream which is applied when a candida infection of the mouth is diagnosed.

Home Remedies

There are also some home remedies for Angular Cheilitis which often are surprisingly effective.

Just make sure to take care of this condition. Angular Stomatitis and Cheilitis can be treated. It’s up to you to take the first step.
