Angular Cheilitis (also known as Perleche and Angular Stomatitis) is one of the most annoying afflictions a person can have. The reasons this is so annoying is that Angular Cheilitis affects the face and so can drastically alter a person’s appearance. Another reason why this affliction is frustrating is that it seems to spring out of thin air without any apparent cause. And indeed, the causes of it are unclear to modern medicine, though some are believed to be the culprits.
Here are some causes of Angular Cheilitis
1. Iron Deficiency – This is believed to be directly related to immune system inefficiency. That’s why those cracks which appear at the corners of your mouth take so long to heal and often become infectious. Make sure to eat Iron rich foods, or take Iron supplements.
2. Vitamin Deficiency – Our immune system is also affected by vitamin deficiencies, especially B12 Vitamin. Overall, it’s best to increase vitamin intake.
3. Unfitting dentures – In elderly people, unfitting dentures may become a reservoir of bacteria which infects the mouth and may bring about Angular Cheilitis. The way to overcome this cause of Angular Cheilitis is to make sure your dentures are clean at all times.
4. Other factors which may cause this are over dryness of the mouth and lips, excessive exposure to the sun, and various foods.
But the actual causes of each case of Angular Cheilitis is still a theoretical subject. But keeping the mouth clean and making sure you consume a healthy diet, are the keys to preventing this affliction.
